Expected climate change means that high water levels will occur more frequently and at higher levels in the future, leading to the possibility that the area near the coast or the river may be submerged. Since 2012, we have initiated and pursued the issue of embankment on Backa Bergögata. The aim is to prevent flooding and landslides in the area. Initially, we were met with scepticism among some of the property owners, but now everyone is in favour.
It has been a long road with extensive technical investigations into the stability of the river. We have wrestled with legal issues such as the need for a water ruling from the Land and Environmental Court, building permits from the municipality and changes to the joint venture by the land registry.
When the County Administrative Board for Western Götaland held a climate adaptation day in 2015, CEO Mats Berntsson was invited to speak about the project at one of the seminars. Now we are waiting to hear from SGI whether they can contribute to the funding.
So far we have strengthened the river edge by injecting lime and next year we plan to carry out the actual embankment. More information to come!
